This is a new series of monthly posts of things I have found interesting, things I have tried and things I have read during the month which are not necessarily running related. Thanks to my dad for coming up with the title!
I’m a palm oil avoider. Unless it is certified sustainable palm oil I don’t want to eat it (if you want to know more about why you should be concerned please visit Palm Oil Investigations). The one thing that I regularly eat that contains palm oil is vegan butter as there are no commercial vegan butters without it. I tried making my own last year but it wasn’t great.
However, at Christmas I was given a copy of The Homemade Vegan Pantry by Miyoko Schinner and this has a recipe for ‘better butter’ which is palm oil free and very easy to make. It’s a hit and very delicious on toast.
Koko coconut yoghurt
On the back of the latest copy of the Vegan Society’s magazine was this advert for Koko yogurt. I’ve yet to see them in the shops, and in fact they aren’t even listed on their website, but as soon as I do I will be buying them.
Why we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows by Melanie Joy
Another Christmas present. I had wanted to read this after I had watched Melanie Joy’s Ted Talk. It is a very engaging book looking at the way our society treats animals and whether there is a way to change this that is not only good for the animals but also good for us. Well worth a read.
The Life Changing Magic of Tidying by Marie Kondo
Now this is a revelation. I’m afraid to admit it but I am a bit of a hoarder. Someone who has stuff for ‘just in case’, who has a pile of mending that never seems to get done, who has magazines going back years.
When a friend posted on Facebook that she had finally had a wardrobe that not only contained everything she wanted to wear but actually had space in it I knew I had to read this book. We’re planning a big move in the near future and I really don’t want to pack things that will just sit in a box and never be unpacked.
So I’m reading this book and have started my epic project. I’ll let you know how it goes.
I really enjoyed reading this blog post by Kristen from Run Away With Me about recovering runner problems. Appropriate timing for me! If you’ve not read Kristen’s blog before have a look as she runs in Alaska and posts some beautiful photos. It makes me want to run in snow!
Is it better to run outside or on a treadmill?
This article on the BBC website looking at which is better for you caught my eye. Both have different benefits but the main thing is that is better to be active than not!
More Fiona! If you saw the short film I shared a week or so ago you will know who Fiona Oakes is. If not, or if you want to know more, pop over to the Forks Over Knives website to read a great article all about her.
What caught your eye this month?
Have you tried tidying the Marie Kondo way? How did it go?
