Kabaret at Karamel

Kabaret at Karamel is a new vegan bar and restaurant in Wood Green, London. It only opened earlier this month so when my mum suggested we go there for lunch after our 10k run in Finsbury Park I was only too happy to say yes!

As a south London girl Wood Green is not a part of London I have cause to visit and to be honest if we weren’t running in Finsbury Park it is unlikely we would have made the trek to this part of deepest darkest north London.

It is a large and airy space that works well as a restaurant and I can see would work well for the various evening events they have listed. They have everything from jazz and dj sessions to poetry readings and children’s puppet shows, as well as being the new venue for the monthly London Vegan Drinks social.

The menu wasn’t the most extensive, with only 5 main dishes, but it was nicely varied. The waitress was very helpful in recommending dishes. Me and my dad went for the Cornish curry pasty whilst my mum went for the recommended Mexican spicy rice dish with salsa.

When the food came I was pleasantly surprised at the portion size, a huge pasty is just what I needed after running 10k! The pastry was lovely and flaky and the salad was tasty.

After our mains we felt it would be rather silly not to sample the desserts, especially as we could try one of each! So an apple pie, a chocolate and coconut cake and a vanilla cupcake were duly ordered. My cupcake had just the right amount of frosting on so it didn’t taste too sweet and went nicely with the vanilla sauce.

I would recommend Kabaret at Karamel. The staff and owners are very friendly, the food was good and the place itself had a nice atmosphere. Next time I’m in North London I’ll definitely be making a beeline to Kabaret.

The day before the Reading Half Marathon went something like this. Parkrun in the morning with my Start to Runners. It’s minus degrees C, it’s windy, there is a sprinkling of snow and they are using the alternative route due to flooding. Not so perfect conditions but good to put my race day clothes to…
