Weekly Round Up
This week was the start of my club’s “Winterval” training. These are road sessions held during the winter months as an alternative to off-road running with head torches. The Winterval session started with hill repeats, something I haven’t really done so I thought I’d forgo the off-road and give it a try.
We started with a very long and steady run to warm up. I think it was about 2 miles before we reached the hill, my Garmin had trouble finding a satellite so didn’t start straight away. Once we got to the hill I was told to take it at my own pace and that we’d aim to do between 8 and 10 repeats. That meant running up one side of the road before running down the other. I decided to try and sprint up the hill and use the downhill to recover and catch my breath.
I did 8 repeats before we regrouped and then we decided to do an extra one, so 9 in total. I felt that I had a good work out, even though we were the first ones back at the club.
Total on my Garmin was 3.62 miles in 34:53 but we were out for a little longer than that.
Saturday was the Women’s Running 10k race in Finsbury Park and I was running this with my mum. We’d booked a place earlier this year and it was my mum’s first 10k event and her first time running that distance. The race was advertised as being a flat race but be warned, there are quite a few hills.
As she had only just recovered from injury we decided not to aim for a time and just take it slowly. My mum said she’d be happy if we got in at 80 minutes. So off we went and as we ran we realised that the 70 minute pacer was just ahead of us and we decided to keep her in our sights.
It paid off as we finished in a good time of 1 hour 8 minutes and 35 seconds with no problems. My mum kept a good pace throughout and it was great to run with her. We are now planning our 2015 events!
